Animals’ Angels visits the horse market in Bodzentyn, Poland. Almost all of the horses being offered for sale have bad hooves. Many of them are standing in the cold morning air wet with perspiration. Cold blood stallion Lukas is supposed to be loaded onto a transporter that is already full – with a whip and yelling. He rears up and goes on the defensive, and after much back and forth we are able to talk the owner into loading Lukas onto a small transporter by himself. But only a short time later we see the owner selling the mare to a transporter who will bring Poziomka to an Italian slaughterhouse. On the way to today’s market ANIMALS’ ANGELS finds stallion Piskorz (2 ½ years), who is lying on the side of the road exhausted. Together with another stallion this stallion was supposed to bring a wagon full of potatoes to market. The way from the farmyard to market was too long and so Piskorz collapsed due to founder and severe muscle aches. We organize straw and blankets and call the veterinarian for help. After 2 hours Piskorz is able to rise and walk normally. We organize a transporter to take him home.Today’s market runs quietly – three animal transporters are loaded. At the Animals’ Angels station we correct the hooves on five horses: Esencja (12 years), Romb (2 years), Hansa (1 1/2 years), Bolek (14 years) and Gwiazdor (1 ½ years). Mare Esencja has a large injury on her back, which we treat. The horse owners are very pleased that our team is back at market.

Afterward she leaves the station without limping. Mare Wazka (4 years) is so nervous that we can only correct her front hooves. ANIMALS’ ANGELS Team inspects the cattle market in Bodzentyn. We still observe transporters with ramps that are much too steep that are not requested by the overseers to drive up to the fixed ramp. We inform the present veterinarians about the animal welfare problems in several cases, e.g. how several unmilked cows are already surrounded by a sea of milk – although EU Regulation 1/2005 provides for maximum milking intervals of 12 hours. The veterinarian does not take any action against the transporter of the animals as we observe.
We discover a transport vehicle for which we have demanded a market ban on several occasions because it risks injury to the animals and we call the police, who also discover technical defects.

The agreements reached are a temporary closing of the market, new market rules, a consistent sanctioning of violations of the animal welfare law and Reg. 1/2005, the installation of two security cameras, the availability of euthanization at market and roofing over part of the premises. One bull (approximately 1 year old) is on a transporter with his front legs tied together. At our request the owner removes the ties that had already grown deeply into the skin. Our other instructions are also carried out without comment by all of the dealers today.
After market we take the mobile clinic to Stara Supia. Stallion Hubert (4 years) is standing in a dark stable filled with muck. He has strongly overgrown hooves, a dirty coat and matted mane. We lunge him behind the stable and afterwards correct his hooves, brush his coat and mane. We will visit Hubert again to carry out a stable modernization so that air and light can enter the stable.

ANIMALS’ ANGELS inspects the cattle market in Bodzentyn under poor weather conditions. Approximately 700 cattle are at market. We discover the black-and-white cow Lisa (approx. 15 years). Her left front leg is broken and it causes her pain to stand, so she lies down in the cold snow. The break pierces the skin and she is bleeding. The leg swells. Despite our protests the veterinarian decides to transport Lisa to the nearest slaughterhouse for emergency slaughter. She is pulled onto the transporter after three hours and taken away. We also discover a transporter with ceilings that are much too low. We will report both incidents to the competent regional veterinarian.

There are still a few dealers who use transporters with load ramps that are much too steep and represent a high risk of injury to the animals. One cow falls so badly that she can no longer put weight on her hind leg. Another cow can no longer get up and remains lying in the cold snow shivering. ANIMALS’ ANGELS submits a list to the regional veterinarian and the mayor of Bodzentyn of vehicles that should be excluded from the market. We take the mobile clinic to a pregnant cow (9 years) who is standing in a stable with a collapsed roof, completely neglected. The owner, over 80 years old, is in the hospital. The ANIMALS’ ANGELS Team inspects the horse market in Bodzentyn again this Monday. Today the market is well attended – six “slaughter” transporters are loaded with horses. Mare Baska (20 years) comes to our ANIMALS’ ANGELS station limping. Her front hooves have varying heights – the right hoof is twice as high as the left one. We find that the hoof frog is severely keratinized and that this is causing the mare a great deal of pain. After the hoof correction on the front hooves Baska no longer limps. On Wednesday we will take the mobile clinic to see her and correct the back hooves as well. Mare Aniela (1 year) comes to us with a wounded leg. We treat the injury and advise the owner to consult a veterinarian since the mare has a fever.

We find downer cow Zora on a truck. So that she will hold her head up the dealer tethers her. We remove the rope and Zora weakly lies on the ground. The veterinarian we call orders her to be killed immediately. We go get Zora a bail of straw so that she does not have to lie on the cold, wet floor.

After market we take the mobile clinic to Celiny to see stallion Kary (2 years) in order to correct his hooves. Then we go make a final inspection of mare Aniela whose hoof growth we are treating. The hooves have healed well and the owner is happy that his mare is now healthy again.

Fortunately, the growth has not grown back, the wound is dry and the leg swelling has gone down. If Aniela receives good care she has a good chance of healing. Finally, we correct the strongly overgrown claws on cow Irena (13 years).

Afterwards, blacksmith Bogdan corrects the hooves of mare Salwa (1 year) at the station; stallion Bolek receives a de-worming treatment.
After the market the Team takes the mobile clinic to Lubienia to see mare Wizja, who has hoof cancer. We give her medications and replace the hoof bandage. Next week we will check the hoof again.

We call the veterinarian, who treats mare Werena (1 year) and stallion Borek (1 year) with an antibiotic. Blacksmith Bogdan corrects the hooves.
Stallion Faktor (3 years) comes to the station. Since getting horseshoes he has been limping. Bogdan finds that the blacksmith placed the nails too deeply into the hoof. He removes the shoe and corrects the hooves. In addition, he works on the hooves of stallion Leos (1 year), stallion Topas (3 years) and gelding Myszek (2 years).

In addition, we exchange her halter for a new one. In addition, we correct the hooves on mare Mala (1 ½ years), stallion Milutek (5 years) and stallion Kasztanek (2 years). Stallion Gniady receives a new bit from us. After the market we visit stallion Human who has a bad case of malanders. The treatment takes more than two hours. A man who has come to market with his little daughter sells his foal to an Italian dealer. The daughter accompanies the foal all the way into the transporter. After the market the Animals’ Angels Team travels to a farmyard with horses to inspect how the animals are kept. We find that the animals are only taken out of their dark stable for work. Since no one is present we will inspect the farmyard again next week.

Not far from us three boys load a few cows onto a transporter. They treat the animals quite carefully since they notice that we are watching them. When a cow slips on the ramp they wait until she gets back up on her own.

At today’s horse market the Animals’ Angels Team discovers an approximately 7-year old white mare that has head and leg injuries. We take her to the Animals’ Angels station and treat the wounds. At the station we correct the hooves of stallion Horado (2 years), stallion Wakat (8 months) and mare Karina (2 years). Stallion Grigorij has a bad case of malanders. We order the necessary medication and will take the mobile clinic to see him as soon as we receive them. Toward evening we receive a call for help. Mare Aldona (10 years) has not been eating for two weeks. She has a foal with her that is a couple of days old. The owner begs us to come as soon as we can. We take the mobile clinic to the farm and find Aldona in the stable, emaciated and with a sad face. We carry out a tooth treatment and hope that Aldona will feel better again soon.

At the Animals’ Angels station we show prepared parasite exhibits today and inform the persons present how important regular de-worming is. Today the Animals’ Angels Team inspects the market in pouring rain. The loading and unloading of the transporters is done correctly today and without incident. Despite the rain we correct the hooves on four horses: stallion Lodowiec (4 years), stallion Grot (1 year), mare Zadrula (1 year) and stallion Bary (8 months). We give stallion Grot a de-worming paste and treat a wound on his hind leg.

Today there are only few animals at market because a horse market is taking place in Skaryszew at the same time. The Animals’ Angels Team discovers stallion Panter (1 year old) whose twine halter has been tied so tightly that it has already grown into the tissue. We exchange the halter for a good one, take care of the wound and correct the stallion’s hooves. At the Animals’ Angels station we also correct the hooves of mare Lajka (1 ½ years old). In Skaryszew three large transporters are loaded. We do not see any sick or injured animals.

The Animals’ Angels team observes three animal transporters being loaded. A foal is down in one of the transporters destined for Italy. After we intervene all of the horses are unloaded and the foal is able to get back up. Today it is snowing in Bodzentyn and we have to clear much snow from the Animals’ Angels station. An older gentleman buys the former “work” mare Baska (25 years) for his grandchildren. We correct her hooves and treat her with a de-worming paste, as we do with stallion Sok. In addition we correct the hooves on stallion Sok (9 months), stallion Rumcajs (8 months) and stallion Szybki (4 years).

Today only few animals are at market since it is a church holiday in Poland. Stallion Bis has a split front hoof and comes to the Animals’ Angels station. Bogdan carefully corrects the hoof. Stallion Galant suffers from a misalignment of the hooves and as result his joints have already been stressed. Unfortunately the owner comes to us too late, but with much diligent care Galant does stand a chance of recovery. In addition we correct the hooves on mare Wena.

This time the transporters have enough straw bedding inside but the required partition walls are still not installed. A long line forms at the Animals’ Angels station today. We correct the hooves on eight horses. All of them have extremely bad hooves. Stallion Eton receives a good bit from us and mares Baska and Hajra receive a de-worming paste.
